Afghan Taliban and Pakistani Forces Report Multiple Deaths in Recent Cross-Border Clashes

Border Tensions Escalate
Pakistani Armed Forces and Afghan Government Blame Each Other of Starting Attacks in Afghanistan's Border District of Spin Boldak

New hostilities broke out along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border early on Wednesday morning, with both parties blaming the opposing side of starting lethal clashes.

The Pakistani military announced that its troops had killed "fifteen to twenty Afghan Taliban" and wounded many in the Spin Boldak frontier area.

A Taliban government spokesman said that twelve Afghan civilians had been fatally struck and more than 100 wounded by Pakistani firing. He further stated that several Pakistani soldiers had been killed. None of the reported fatalities could be independently confirmed.

Hostilities between the neighbouring countries has escalated since explosions shook Afghanistan recently, which Kabul blamed on Islamabad. The Afghan leadership deny claims that it is harboring militants targeting Pakistan.

Social Media and Military Engagements

The opposing forces are not only battling for the advantage on the frontier, but also on digital platforms, attempting to convince the public that their side is causing greater losses.

The latest clashes follow intense cross-border hostilities over the past few days, when the Taliban asserted to have killed fifty-eight members of the Pakistani military and Pakistan reported it neutralized two hundred "militants and linked terrorists". The reported death tolls announced by each side could not be independently verified.

A few days of unstable peace that had lasted since the weekend were shattered on Wednesday.

On-the-Ground Reports and Impact

Videos purportedly of the fighting and its aftereffects have been shared online and on messaging groups, including images said to be of those deceased and blurry shots from low-light cameras purporting to be of guard positions demolished. These videos have not been authenticated.

A source in the border area in Afghanistan reported that fighting broke out at around 4 a.m. local time (11:30 p.m. GMT on the previous day). Another resident in Spin Boldak, who lives about one kilometre away from the border crossing, reported that "very heavy hostilities persisted for almost several hours".

"We observed unmanned aircraft and jets soaring over us, a number of our family members are wounded," they added.

A medical professional in one of the hospitals in the region reported that he tallied "seven fatalities and 36 injured brought to the hospital", including males, females and minors.

The situation were "tense" and additional casualties were being transferred to hospital, he said.

Displacement and Global Responses

A local Taliban official in the area stated that "numerous of households have been forced to flee since the previous evening due to the intense clashes". He said they were on "maximum readiness" after a few Taliban posts were attacked by aircraft from Pakistan. He further indicated that they had the bodies of 2 armed forces members.

In a distinct overnight clash on Pakistan's western border, the Pakistani military said that 25 to 30 militant and local insurgent fighters were "suspected" to have been eliminated.

The clashes have prompted appeals for de-escalation from foreign nations including Beijing and Moscow, as well as a proposal from US President Donald Trump that he could step in to broker peace.

On that day, a UN official, UN special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, wrote on X that he was "deeply concerned" by accounts of non-combatant deaths and displacement because of the fighting.

"I urge everyone involved to exercise the utmost caution, protect civilians, and abide by international law," he wrote.

Historical Disputes

Islamabad has for years alleged the Afghan Taliban of permitting the Pakistan Taliban to function from their land and battle against the Islamabad government in an attempt to impose a rigid Islamic-led system of governance.

The Afghan Taliban government has always denied these allegations.
