Caelan Doris Secures Spot in Ireland Squad But Joe McCarthy Left Out
Returning head coach the Ireland coach has included captain Caelan Doris in his Ireland roster for the fall internationals, but Joe McCarthy misses out.
Doris, who has not played since undergoing shoulder surgery in the start of May, has come back to provincial training, though his fitness is uncertain whether he will be ready to face New Zealand in the US on November 1.
Second row McCarthy, on the other hand, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot issue suffered during the opening Lions match against the Wallabies in July.
Northern province player Cormac Izuchukwu and Munster winger Calvin Nash also miss out due to fitness concerns, while number 15 Keenan had already been ruled out after having a hip operation after the summer tour.
Dublin province prop Paddy McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only uncapped player in the 34-player squad, however Irish rugby authorities says new provincial duo Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped Connacht winger Shayne Bolton will travel to the US as "cover".
After facing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a rematch of their 2016 meeting, Ireland host Japan, Australia and world title holders South Africa in Dublin.
"There's an exciting look to the panel and it's a chance for the veteran members and for the newcomers on the summer tour to Georgia and the Lobos," commented the coach, who returns to national team duties after a break to coach the British and Irish Lions to Australia.
In a largely experienced squad, Leinster's Prendergast and Munster's Crowley will once again compete for the first-choice number 10 position. The fly-half role is remains available, with Prendergast and Crowley poised to play against each other for the first occasion in the upcoming United Rugby Championship match at the Dublin venue.
Frawley is the third number 10 selected with Farrell opting against selecting Leinster's Byrne.
At number 9, the Ireland boss has selected British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained the national side to the summer international wins over the Lelos and Portugal. There is also a return for Connacht's Caolin Blade, chosen to club-mate Ben Murphy.
Henshaw, Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey represent an veteran cohort of midfield options. Osborne is another option in the midfield, though the 23-year-old is additionally a leading candidate to deputise for the full-back at number 15.
Outside backs James Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. O'Brien impressed on his national team debut over the summer with two tries apiece in the wins over Georgia and the Lobos.
McCarthy is the sole fresh name in the Irish forwards. The front rower has started a couple of Leinster's three United Rugby Championship matches this season and played in the second string's defeat by England in the English city previously.
The 22-year-old was included in interim boss O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not receive a international appearance.
Munster lock Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those matches, is retained, and veteran Ulster second row Iain Henderson is back after missing the summer matches.
Jack Conan, who started each of the Lions matches during the tour, is poised to deputise for the captain if the skipper fails to recover fitness in time to face New Zealand.
The Ireland squad will meet in the capital on the start of the week before traveling to Chicago on the following day.
