The Fianna Fáil nominee Jim Gavin has declared his withdrawal from the Irish presidential election right away.

He was scheduled to be a candidate among three competing for Ireland's head of state, beside TD Catherine Connolly and Heather Humphreys of Fine Gael.

However, Sunday night he stated via a statement he had "made a mistake which did not align with his character and the standards he upholds."

"Considering all these factors, I've resolved to withdraw from the presidential election contest immediately and reunite with my loved ones," he declared via a statement.
