An individual who spiked candy with sleeping medication and gave them to minors at a youth camp in the area has confessed to sexual offences against two children aged nine and ten years old.

Jon Ruben was detained after eight children and an older person experienced illness at the facility in mid-summer.

The 76-year-old, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, confessed to a series of 17 offences when he stood at the courthouse on recently.

However, he refused to admit one particular crime he was facing, which was against a nine-year-old boy.

The accused was remanded in custody before a further hearing on 28 November.

'Candy game'

The legal representative, handling the case, described the criminal behavior to the legal proceedings.

She said his targets were disadvantaged youngsters who were staying at a summer camp which he ran.

The defendant played a "treat game" with the children, Mrs Prior said, in which he would access the sleeping quarters when they were preparing to sleep and request they to eat sweets "as fast as possible".

She informed the proceedings the man had engaged in this activity with the children "repeatedly", and children had earlier experienced illness the subsequent day.

She said Ruben had been capable of justifying this over a long period as the children being "overstimulated by activities", until his stepchild had worries in summer 2025.

The prosecutor stated further: "This year his stepson had worries about the activities, with valid cause.

"They resolved" to investigate in the individual's items."

The legal counsel explained objects including baby oil, ointment and injection devices were located, and his stepchild alerted the law enforcement about his concerns.

She explained the defendant proceeded to engage in the "treat game" with six boys that time - Saturday 26 July - and they were all ill the following morning.

"Authorities" had not responded by that point," she stated further.

The oversight body, the police conduct office, earlier informed that it was investigating the police response of the situation.

Mrs Prior said the minors were having difficulty walking due to their sickness, so the stepson contacted the authorities again.

She explained the man then played the "treat game" in a room of five minors.
