Significant Internet Disruption Impacts Many Websites and Mobile Apps

A large-scale online failure has disrupted dozens sites and mobile apps around the world, as users reporting troubles getting online following issues at Amazon’s web hosting platform.

The affected services comprise the social media app Snapchat, Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and Duolingo, in addition to multiple Amazon-owned services such as its main retail platform and the Ring doorbell company.

Throughout Britain, the financial institution Lloyds was disrupted along with its affiliates the bank Halifax and Bank of Scotland, with also reports of issues accessing the HMRC online portal on the start of the week. Additionally in Britain, multiple Ring users used social media to state their security devices were malfunctioning.

Solely in the United Kingdom, reports of disruptions on specific platforms ran into the many thousands for each app.

Officials confirmed that the problem originated in the Atlantic coast of the US at the cloud division, a section that provides crucial online framework for many businesses, who rent out space on AWS infrastructure. AWS is the biggest global web hosting platform.

Just after the start of the day (PDT) in the US (8 in the morning BST), Amazon confirmed “increased failure rates and delays” for AWS services in a area on the Atlantic seaboard of the America. The cascading impact was seen to affect platforms globally, and the Downdetector site indicating outages with the same sites in various regions.

The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a service that tracks web disruptions, further indicated a surge in issues on the start of the week, including several cases situated in the Virginia area, the location of the AWS US-East-1 zone where officials confirmed the problems originated.
