Steven Gerrard under consideration for Glasgow Rangers comeback after Russell Martin is sacked.
The Anfield icon is being strongly considered for a dramatic comeback to the Scottish giants following the announced departure of manager the ex-Swansea boss.
The manager's disastrous spell at Rangers ends
The coach's troubled Ibrox tenure ended with the manager leaving the Falkirk's ground via a rear entrance and a waiting car after a 1-1 draw which left the Glasgow side 11 points from the peak of the premier division after just seven games.
Angry supporters had surrounded the Rangers team bus in the stadium location, showing their discontent.
Club hierarchy unwilling to part with the manager
The club directors had been hesitant to dismiss the coach, who was only hired in the summer, despite vociferous protests from the fanbase.
However, there was an acknowledgement that the coach's job had become untenable.
Rangers have managed only one win of their Premiership matches to date, which has been coupled with disappointing displays in European competition.
Collectively, Martin managed only five wins of 17 official games, with a uninspiring, confused brand of football that earned him few friends.
“Even though changeovers require some time, performances have not met the organization's goals,” stated a club announcement on Sunday night.
“Assistant head coach Gill, and senior coach the coach, will also be leaving. Martin and his staff have worked exceptionally hard throughout their spell. We are grateful for their work and send best wishes for the time ahead.”
Steven Gerrard won the title with the team
Gerrard claimed the league with Rangers in 2020-21, their only championship since that year.
His achievements in Glasgow before then, alongside difficulties at Villa, raises questions about his leadership skills.
Yet he is greatly respected by the very fanbase the club urgently require back on side.
The return of the Anfield legend, who previously worked in the Middle East, would generate significant excitement.
The coach will also be aware of what scarce chances he has to be a manager in top-tier competitions.
The sacking will intensify scrutiny on Kevin Thelwell
Martin’s exit will heighten focus on the sporting director, the Ibrox director.
He had been very backing of the manager while announcing a transfer outlay of twenty million pounds in the off-season.
Martin had agreed to a three-year contract.
His previous experience
The manager, who had previously been in charge MK Dons and Swansea, guided the south coast club to elevation to the top flight in that year after being hired the previous summer.
He was dismissed last the end of the year after the the club managed only one win of their initial 16 matches.
He was chosen as the interim boss's replacement in the summer, after the temporary manager had replaced the fired Philippe Clement in the earlier part of the year.
