UN Lifts Restrictions on Syrian President Prior to White House Visit
Security Council representatives voted in favour to a United States-backed measure to lift sanctions on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa ahead of his White House visit the coming week.
He became interim leader subsequent to commanding a rebel offensive that ousted Bashar al-Assad in winter 2024, concluding thirteen long years of internal conflict.
The US representative Mike Waltz at the United Nations stated the United Nations delivered "a strong political signal" that acknowledged Syria entered "a fresh chapter" since Assad was deposed.
Previously, he faced UN sanctions as the leader of the Muslim faction the HTS movement, previously associated with the terrorist network. Washington eliminated the group from its registry of international terrorist organizations this past July.
Additional Sanctions Relief
The UN also removed restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister Minister Anas Khattab.
Syria's foreign minister applauded the lifting of the penalties, stating online: "Syrian officials convey thanks to the United States and to friendly nations for their support the Syrian nation and citizens."
Imminent Washington Talks
Sharaa's White House visit at the start of the week follows US President Donald Trump remarked that Sharaa demonstrated "substantial headway" towards bringing peace to the conflict-ravaged nation.
The two leaders convened on their first occasion this past May, when Trump visited Riyadh on a tour of the region.
Following that encounter, the US president described him as a "resilient figure" with a "very strong past".
His former militant faction served as al-Qaeda's branch within Syria prior to breaking relations during 2016.
Prior United States Journey
This week's diplomatic engagement will not be his initial visit to America this year. In September, he emerged as the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to speak before the global assembly in New York in almost 60 years.
During his address, he stated the country had been "regaining its deserved status among the nations of the world" and expressed solidarity toward Gaza's residents.
