Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the option to question specific decisions made by the chair umpire, following the protocol already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

Practical Application

A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
