During an initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” America's largest city, declaring “a new era” and an ambitious beginning to his administration.

An Unprecedented Figure

The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the public whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.

Defying advice to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead boldly and broadly.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my principles for fear of being called radical,” he said to loud cheers.

The inauguration was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over political establishments.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a agenda including:

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
